Tom Popp , Director of Church Life
Although I grew up a Hoosier Presbyterian, for the last thirty years I have been a member of the Lake Mills United Methodist Church, where I serve on Church Council and several committees. I am also a lay member of Annual Conference and of our Board of Ordained Ministry. After working in local government in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, I took my first job in Wisconsin to be the City Manager of Lake Mills. The position from which I retired years later was Village Administrator of Shorewood Hills. I have also been an (intentionally) interim executive director for several Dane County agencies: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club, Community GroundWorks (formerly Friends of Troy Gardens), and Habitat for Humanity. I hold a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and a master’s (in public administration) from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. I always say that my most important job was not the career but being a parent: I am a single dad with two grown sons, both now married, a grown daughter, still in college, and a grown Brazilian youth exchange son, whose wedding in Brazil we all attended last October. So far I have two grandchildren. Three years ago my daughter and my Brazilian son and I went to Malawi, in southeast Africa, where we helped to start a project for orphans and where, as a youth, I had been a Peace Corps Volunteer. I am an active member of The Rotary Club of Madison, and I serve on the boards of several local organizations. I also live in the Sunset Village neighborhood, which means I can save gas and walk to work. It is a joy to be part of Bethany! |
